The guide

Four ecosystems, one country.

Ecuador is the only place on the planet where you can breakfast in a colonial city at 2,800 metres, lunch in the Amazon jungle and watch a snow-capped volcano from the bus window.

This guide explains how to move between the Andes, the Amazon, the Pacific coast and the Galápagos without getting lost in the logistics. Which volcano is worth climbing, which island to visit given your time, which indigenous communities do real tourism and how to get to the Galápagos without paying twice what you need to.

How to visit the islands without overpaying

The Galápagos are expensive because everyone accepts they are expensive. They don't have to be.

Most tourists arrive with a tour booked from home that includes flights, hotel and excursions in a package. It's the most expensive option and the one that gives you least control over what you see.

The guide explains how to organise the islands independently: which flights to compare, which island works as a base, which excursions are worth booking on arrival and which don't justify the price.

Traveller tip

Fly to Santa Cruz (Baltra), not San Cristóbal. From Santa Cruz you have more excursion options and it's easier to redistribute your time if you want to spend more days on one island.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Ecuador? +

Most European and North American passport holders do not need a visa. You can enter with a passport and stay up to 90 days as a tourist.

How do I get to the Galápagos? +

Only by flight from Quito or Guayaquil. There is no mainland ferry. Flights depart from both cities several times a day. You must pay a national park entry fee at the airport.

Is Ecuador safe to travel? +

The highlands (Quito, Cuenca, Otavalo) and the Galápagos are safe for independent travel. Guayaquil has areas requiring caution. The northern coast and some Amazon border zones should be checked before visiting. The guide details the current situation zone by zone.

When is the best time to go? +

It depends on the region. Highlands: June-September (dry, cool). Coast: December-May (warm, light rain, calm sea). Galápagos: year-round, though June-November has cooler waters and more swell. The guide covers each region in detail.
