Berat — from the full guide

Berat

Berat

The city of a thousand windows

Berat reads like a lesson in coexistence written in stone. Two neighbourhoods face each other across the Osum — Mangalem, Ottoman-Muslim, and Gorica, Christian — linked by an 18th-century bridge and crowned by a citadel where people still live. The whitewashed houses with slate-slab roofs climb the hillside, each with a window facing the river, and together they compose the image that gave the city its nickname.

Inside the castle — Kalaja — Byzantine churches survive, the Onufri Museum holds its 16th-century red icons, and families do their shopping at the small kiosk in the courtyard. Nowhere else in Albania mixes the everyday with the monumental quite so clearly.

Traveller's tip: Climb to the castle at sunset. The raking light turns Mangalem into a golden honeycomb. Entry is 400 leks (≈€4) and the interior is open — you can wander among the houses without a guide. Wear proper soles: the cobbles are slick in damp.
