The Registan of Samarkand — from the complete guide

Registan Square

Samarkand

The jewel of the Silk Road

Samarkand is perhaps the most evocative city in all of Central Asia. Its turquoise domes dominate the skyline and its history as a crossroads of civilisations — Persian, Greek, Mongol and Timurid — makes it a destination unlike any other in the world.

The Registan, its monumental square, is one of the most impressive architectural ensembles in the Islamic world. The three madrassas that frame it — Ulugbek, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori — date from the 15th and 17th centuries. Their restoration is debated among experts, but their visual impact is beyond question.

Traveller's tip: Arrive at the Registan at sunset to watch the golden light wash over the mosaics. The evening light show (€8) is worth it, but the golden hour is free and far more photogenic.
