The guide
The Uzbekistan guide Understand before you visit.
Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are not three pretty cities. They are chapters in the history of Eurasia.
This Uzbekistan guide explains why they are where they are, which empires built them, what the mosaics you are looking at actually mean, and how to move today through a country still reinventing itself after seventy years of USSR. No clichés. No "must-sees". No filler.

Chapter · Samarkand
The jewel of the Silk Road
Samarkand is perhaps the most evocative city in all of Central Asia.
Its turquoise domes dominate the skyline, and its history as a crossroads of civilizations — Persian, Greek, Mongol and Timurid — makes it a destination unique in the world.
The Registan, its monumental square, is one of the most impressive architectural complexes in Islam. The three madrasas that compose it — Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori — date from the 15th and 17th centuries, and their restoration is debated among experts, but their visual impact is undeniable.
Traveler tip
Arrive at the Registan at sunset to see the golden light wash over the mosaics. The nightly light show (€8) is worth it, but the golden hour is free and far more photogenic.
