The guide
The Thailand guide Choosing between ten Thailands.
Thailand's problem is not finding things to do, it is deciding what to skip. The country is too big to do whole.
This Thailand guide explains how to choose between the Andaman islands and the Gulf islands, what makes Chiang Mai different from Chiang Rai, how to read a Theravada temple, and how to move through a country where transport works, food is a religion, and haggling is unlike Vietnam.

A fragment,
Ayutthaya, the lost capital.
Chapter · Ayutthaya
The razed capital
Ayutthaya is not a ruin: it is the physical testimony of how a kingdom that lasted 417 years and ruled Southeast Asia came to an end.
Founded in 1351 at the confluence of three rivers, Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siamese kingdom until 1767, when the Burmese razed it and forced King Taksin to refound Bangkok 80 km to the south.
The guide explains which temples to visit and in what order (Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Chaiwatthanaram), why the decapitated Buddha heads still lie on the ground, and how to do Ayutthaya in a day from Bangkok without burning out.
Traveler tip
Rent a bike at the train station. Temples are 1-3 km apart, the heat on foot is brutal, and per-hour tuk-tuk prices are abusive for long loops.
