Kotor — from the complete guide

Kotor

Kotor

Where the mountains fall into the sea

Kotor is unlike any other Adriatic city. Tucked at the end of a bay that resembles a fjord, surrounded by walls that climb to the fortress of St. John at 1,200 metres, it is a place where geography defines every aspect of life. The streets of the old town follow no plan: they coil, narrow and open into squares where footsteps echo on stone.

The Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is the natural entry point into Montenegro for anyone arriving from Croatia. But it is not just a stopover: between Perast, Herceg Novi and Kotor itself, the bay holds centuries of maritime history, Venetian architecture and a light that changes with every hour of the day.

Traveller's tip: Climb to the fortress of St. John at sunrise. It's 1,350 steps but you'll have the walls to yourself. Bring water and grippy shoes — the stone steps are slippery. Entry costs €8 in high season.
