The guide

The Montenegro guide A country in the palm of your hand.

Montenegro fits entirely into a long weekend. But two weeks are not enough to understand it.

This Montenegro guide explains why the Bay of Kotor feels like a Mediterranean fjord, how you cross from coast to the Durmitor massif in 3 hours, what makes Cetinje the real historical capital, and how to move through a country of 600,000 without getting stuck in tourist Budva.

Bay of Kotor

Chapter · Kotor

The bay that looks like a fjord

Kotor is not a coastal town: it is a town at the end of a bay, shielded by 1,700 m mountains.

The walls climb 260 m from the sea up to the fortress of San Giovanni. Built by Venice, they define the silhouette that makes Kotor the only town in the Balkans with a genuinely Alpine-Mediterranean feel.

The guide explains why the bay is geomorphologically different, what to do in Perast (10 min away), and how to beat the cruise-ship crowd by reaching the viewpoint before opening.

Traveler tip

Walk the walls at dawn (before 8) or at sunset. Midday heat in summer turns the climb into a slog and coincides with cruise groups.
