The guide
The Egypt guide Four thousand years, read in order.
Egypt is not a visit, it is a reading: hieroglyphs, strata, empires, all stacked on the same landscape.
This Egypt guide explains how an Old Kingdom pyramid differs from a Middle Kingdom one, how to read a Ptolemaic temple, when a cruise makes sense and when the bus does, and how to move through a country of 100 million people where haggling is part of the language.

Chapter · Luxor
Karnak, the temple that never ended
Karnak is not a temple — it is two thousand years of temples stacked on top of each other: each pharaoh added his own claim to eternity.
Dedicated to Amun, the complex covers 30 hectares and brings together work from the Middle Kingdom, the New Kingdom and the Ptolemies. Its hypostyle hall — 134 columns, 23 metres tall — is still the largest sacred colonnade of antiquity.
The guide explains why the obelisks stand where they stand, what the reliefs on the north wall actually say, and how to walk the site in the correct order without doubling back.
Traveler tip
Get there for opening at 6:00. Do the hypostyle hall and the obelisks first — before the direct sun hits the columns and before organized groups arrive around 8:30.
