Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids & Memphis

Four thousand five hundred years of vertical history

The pyramids of Giza are not the oldest in Egypt — that honour belongs to Djoser's Step Pyramid at Saqqara, built a century earlier. But Giza is where pharaonic engineering reached its peak. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, originally 146 metres tall, was the tallest structure on Earth for almost four thousand years.

What no photograph conveys is the scale. Each limestone block weighs between two and fifteen tonnes. There are over two million of them. They took roughly twenty years to place, during the Nile's annual floods, when farmers could not work the land.

Traveller's tip: Visit Giza first thing in the morning (the site opens at 7:00). By 9:00 the tour buses arrive and the experience changes completely. Entry to the complex costs 240 EGP (~€5), but entering the Great Pyramid is an additional 440 EGP.
