Thailand in 3 weeks: complete itinerary with alternatives
A 21-day itinerary through Thailand combining Bangkok, the north, the Gulf islands and the Andaman, with variants by traveller profile and season.
Three weeks is the length that turns a trip to Thailand into something truly meaningful. With less (10-12 days), you do the classic Bangkok + one island rushed; with more (a month or more), you enter slow travel mode and can stay long periods in one place. Three weeks is the balance point: enough time to combine mainland and islands, try two or three different regional cuisines, visit the major heritage sites and still disconnect a few days on a beach.
This itinerary is designed for a relatively complete first trip. It does not include absolutely everything — Thailand is enormous — but it covers the essentials and leaves doors open to return.
Summary: 21 days around Thailand
- Day 1-3: Bangkok
- Day 4: Ayutthaya (day from Bangkok or stop en route north)
- Day 5-7: Chiang Mai
- Day 8-9: Pai or Chiang Rai
- Day 10: Return to Bangkok (flight)
- Day 11-14: Gulf or Andaman islands (depending on dates)
- Day 15-18: Second base on the same coast
- Day 19-20: Slow pace or return to Bangkok
- Day 21: International flight
Let’s look at each block in detail.
Day 1-3: Bangkok (3 days)
Landing at Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Airport Link train or taxi to hotel (one hour). Stay in Riverside (near the Chao Phraya) or Sukhumvit (for nightlife and modern transport). Avoid Khao San Road if you are not a backpacker.
Day 1. Jet lag reset. Walk through chosen neighbourhood, nearby street market, Thai massage spa (500-900 THB), light dinner.
Day 2. Historical Bangkok: Grand Palace + Wat Phra Kaew (arrive at 8:30 before groups, 500 THB, covered dress), Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun at sunset crossing by ferry. Dinner in Yaowarat (Chinatown).
Day 3. Modern Bangkok: floating market (Amphawa if weekend, Damnoen Saduak weekday) or Or Tor Kor Market + MBK, Chatuchak Weekend Market (Saturday-Sunday only), walk through Lumphini Park, rooftop bar (Sky Bar, Vertigo, Octave). Dinner at a neighbourhood restaurant.
Alternative: add a day for distant floating markets (Amphawa) or a full-day Ayutthaya excursion from Bangkok.
Day 4: Ayutthaya
Local train from Hua Lamphong to Ayutthaya (1h30m, 20-150 THB) or minibus. Rent a bicycle on arrival (60 THB/day) and circuit the ruins: Wat Mahathat (the famous Buddha head in roots), Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Chaiwatthanaram at sunset. Sleep in Ayutthaya or return to Bangkok.
Alternative: if travelling on the overnight train north that same night, catch the Bangkok-Chiang Mai overnight (departure 19:30-20:00, arrival 8:00 am).
Day 5-7: Chiang Mai (3 days)
Flight or overnight train to Chiang Mai. Accommodation inside the old citadel or in Nimmanhaemin (modern, good coffee).
Day 5. Old citadel temples: Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh. Lunch at Huen Jai Yong or at SP Chicken (khao soi). Afternoon at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (30 min by songthaew). Sunset from the mountain.
Day 6. Thai cooking class at Thai Farm Cooking School (half day, 1,200-1,800 THB) or ethical elephant sanctuary (Elephant Nature Park, 3,500-5,000 THB full day). Evening at Sunday Walking Street (if Sunday) or Night Bazaar.
Day 7. Trek to an ethnic minority village (full day, 1,500-2,500 THB) or motorbike circuit through Mae Sa Valley (waterfalls, orchid park, Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden). Massage at Fah Lanna.
Day 8-9: Pai or Chiang Rai (2 days)
Option A: Pai (3h minibus on a road with 762 curves). Stay at a resort with valley view. Visit Pai Canyon at sunset, Mo Paeng and Pam Bok waterfalls, hot springs, and enjoy the town’s alternative scene. Better option for rest and landscape.
Option B: Chiang Rai (3h by bus). Accommodation in the centre. Visit Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple), Baan Dam (Black House) and, if there is time, the Golden Triangle. Better option for culture.
Day 10: Return to Bangkok
Flight Chiang Rai/Chiang Mai to Bangkok (1h15m). Book the connection to avoid spending the night if going directly to islands next day. If not, one more Bangkok night for laundry, repacking and rest before the islands.
Day 11-14: First islands (4 days)
Here the itinerary splits depending on trip date and preferences.
Andaman route (Nov-April):
- Day 11: Flight Bangkok-Krabi. Transfer to Ao Nang.
- Day 12: Day in Railay (climbing, beaches).
- Day 13: Phi Phi excursion (full day from Krabi).
- Day 14: Rest in Ao Nang or Hong Islands excursion.
Gulf route (Feb-Sept):
- Day 11: Flight Bangkok-Samui. Transfer to Bo Phut or Chaweng.
- Day 12: Beach day + Angthong Marine Park excursion.
- Day 13: Temples (Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem) and cooking.
- Day 14: Rest or visit to Koh Phangan (full day).
Day 15-18: Second base (4 days)
Andaman route:
- Relaxed option: Koh Lanta (4 days of long beach and slow travel).
- Active option: Koh Phi Phi (2 nights) + Koh Lanta (2 nights).
- Remote option: Koh Lipe (long ferry but incredible sea).
Gulf route:
- North Koh Phangan (Thong Nai Pan) 3 nights + Full Moon day at Haad Rin if timing fits.
- Or ferry to Koh Tao and do an Open Water diving course (3-4 full days).
Day 19-20: Slow pace (2 days)
Last two days at a very relaxed pace. Massages, local boat fishing, island cooking class, reading. Or, if you prefer action, return to Bangkok early and take advantage for last shopping (Chatuchak if it coincides with the weekend) and restaurants you didn’t have time to try.
Day 21: International flight
If sleeping on an island, ferry + bus + flight with enough time. Leave by morning at the latest to avoid missing the flight. If returning to Bangkok on day 20, an additional day to enjoy the city before the flight.
Alternatives by profile
Family with children (6-14 years). Reduce Bangkok to 2 days, add Khao Yai (2 days), islands: Koh Lanta or Koh Samui. Avoid Phi Phi due to crowds, avoid Phangan party.
Honeymoon couples. Bangkok 2 nights (boutique hotel), Chiang Mai 2 nights, then straight to luxury: Koh Yao Noi (Six Senses) or Koh Kood (Soneva Kiri) or Koh Samui (Four Seasons).
Adventurers / trekking. More days in the north (Mae Hong Son Loop, 5-6 days), Pai, Chiang Rai. Reduce islands.
Foodies. More time in Bangkok (5 days) and Chiang Mai (4 days). Cooking classes. Perhaps add Isaan for regional gastronomy.
Divers. All emphasis on islands: Koh Tao + Similan (from Khao Lak) + Phi Phi/Hin Daeng.
