Cat Ba: the big island of Halong Bay without the crowded cruises
260 km², 70% national park, Lan Ha Bay beaches, trekking and cheap access. Why Cat Ba is the smart alternative to Halong cruises.
Halong Bay has a problem: 4 million visitors a year, 500 active cruises, inflated prices. The solution is called Cat Ba — the largest island in the bay (260 km², 12,000 inhabitants), with UNESCO national park, its own beaches, trekking, ferry access from Haiphong, and prices 50% lower. Technically Cat Ba sits within a separate archipelago (Lan Ha Bay), but geologically it’s the same: same karst, same limestone islets, same turquoise water.
Why pick Cat Ba over a classic cruise
Halong cruises depart from Tuan Chau (near Hanoi) and cover the central, busy, expensive zone. Cat Ba covers Lan Ha Bay — the southern bay, with 400 islets, accessible beaches, and less than 10% of the official cruises. And you can sleep on land (island) instead of boat (more comfortable, cheaper).
- Area 260 km²
- National park 70% of island
- Hotel in Cat Ba €25-80/night
- Ferry from Haiphong 100-150,000 VND
Lan Ha Bay: the Halong alternative
Lan Ha Bay is the southern bay, with 400 karstic islets and 139 small beaches (some 20 m of sand between vertical walls). Visited by kayak or speedboat from Cat Ba town. Day tours: 400-700,000 VND with meal and kayak. Overnight-on-boat tours: 900,000-1,500,000 VND (1 night, similar price to Halong but with fewer people).
Crystal water + caves + floating fishing villages + kayaking to solitary beaches = the experience Halong promises but without the saturation.
Cat Ba National Park
70% of the island is national park. Fauna: Cat Ba langur (endemic, 60 surviving individuals, one of the world’s most endangered primates), civets, macaques, 200 bird species. Flora: primary tropical rainforest.
Recommended trekking:
- Ngu Lam Peak route (225 m): 2 h round trip, panoramic. 80,000 VND park entry.
- Viet Hai village route (isolated fishing village): 4 h, starts at Hospital Cave, ends in the hamlet. Return by boat (30 min to Cat Ba town).
- Monkey Island: nearby islet, aggressive macaques (caution). 150,000 VND boat.
Cat Ba town vs. the beaches
Cat Ba town (south of the island, 8,000 inhabitants) is the services hub: hotels, restaurants, agencies. But the coast here has medium beaches and commercial port, not the pretty area.
Cat Co beaches (1, 2, 3): 3 km east of Cat Ba town. The decent “touristic” beaches. Free. Small beaches (50-100 m), cliff-ringed.
Secret Lan Ha beaches (by boat/kayak): the most beautiful. Viet Hai, Monkey Island, several unnamed. Only accessible on tour.
How to get there
From Hanoi, 3 options:
- Bus + ferry (cheapest): bus to Haiphong (2 h, 150-250,000 VND) + ferry to Cat Ba (45 min, 100-150,000 VND). Total 4-5 h.
- Direct bus with ferry included (Cat Ba Discovery, Good Morning Cat Ba): leaves Hanoi 7-8 am, arrives Cat Ba 12-13. 250-350,000 VND.
- 2-day 1-night tour from Hanoi (combining Lan Ha Bay + Cat Ba): €80-150. Simplest if you don’t want to organise.
Where to sleep on Cat Ba
- Cat Ba Island Resort & Spa: beachfront, €80-140.
- LePont Cat Ba Bungalows: isolated area, €50-80.
- Hotel Little Cat Ba Paradise: mid, €35-55.
- Central Backpackers Cat Ba: hostel, €15-25.
3-day route
- Day 1: arrive Cat Ba + national park trekking. Night in Cat Ba town.
- Day 2: full Lan Ha Bay tour (kayak + beaches + cave). Night Cat Ba.
- Day 3: Cat Co beach in the morning, back to Hanoi afternoon.
