Phong Nha: the world's most spectacular cave system (discovered in 2009)
Son Doong, Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave. Why these Vietnamese caverns are the active frontier of global cave exploration.
In 2009, a team of British cavers led by Howard Limbert entered Son Doong cave in central Vietnam. What they found redrew the world map of speleology: the planet’s largest cave. 9 km long, main gallery 200 m high and 150 m wide, underground rivers, internal jungle, clouds forming inside. A Boeing 747 would fit in its main chamber. And Son Doong isn’t alone: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park holds over 300 discovered caves and probably many more undiscovered.
What Phong Nha is
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, in Quang Binh province (north-central Vietnam, near the old north-south DMZ border). 885 km² of tropical karst — 400-million-year-old karstic limestone, Asia’s oldest. UNESCO 2003 + 2015 (two inscriptions, first for geological value, then for biodiversity).
- 300+ documented caves.
- 65 km of known underground gallery.
- Over 500 km estimated unexplored.
Access via Son Trach / Phong Nha Village, 50 km west of Dong Hoi (own airport with flights from Hanoi and Saigon).

Son Doong: the #1 cave
Accidentally found in 1991 by a local villager, rediscovered by cavers in 2009. 9 km long. Main chamber big enough for a 40-storey tower. Features:
- Two “dolines” (ceiling openings admitting sunlight), creating underground jungles with unique flora.
- Navigable underground river.
- Stalagmitic formations 80 m tall (world’s tallest).
- Clouds forming inside through condensation.
Visit: only with Oxalis Adventure (monopoly concessioned by the government). 4-day 3-night expedition hiking and sleeping inside. 2026 price: $3,000 per person. Maximum 1,000 visitors yearly. Caves accessible without expedition
Two impressive caves without extreme physical requirements:
Paradise Cave (Thien Duong)
Discovered 200531 km long (1 km accessible to the public on wooden walkways). 100 m ceiling. Spectacular calcite formations. 250,000 VND entry. 2-hour visit.
Phong Nha Cave
Known for centuriesThe historic cave, known to local fishermen forever. Visited by boat from Son Trach, 1.5 km navigable gallery + 500 m on foot. 150,000 VND + boat. 2 h.
Cave fishing
Phong Nha has a unique tradition: fishing inside water caves. Caves Toi and Vom shelter cave fish adapted to total darkness. Day tours with local fishermen: 400-700,000 VND. Experience unlike any other tour.
War history
During the Vietnam War, Phong Nha sat on the Ho Chi Minh Trail — North Vietnam’s logistical network supplying the south. Many caves were used as shelters, hospitals, warehouses. The Cave of the 8 Youths (6 km from the village) has a painful story: in 1972, an American bombing sealed the entrance with 8 young people inside. All died. Memorial today.
This historical layer is invisible in standard tourist tours but key to understanding the place.
