Phu Quoc: the Vietnamese tropical island that rivals Bali and still costs half

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island (567 km²), located in the Gulf of Thailand — geographically closer to Cambodia (14 km) than to mainland Vietnam (45 km). Until 2014 it was a secondary destination with solitary beaches and fishing. Since 2018 — with a new large international airport, Vingroup’s Grand World complex and the world’s longest over-sea cable car — it has become the Vietnamese Bali: 5* resorts, casinos, shopping, nightlife. Half love this transformation. The other half hate it.

What Phu Quoc is today

Three distinct zones:

  • Duong Dong (north-central, capital): main town, airport, night market, fishermen.
  • South (An Thoi + small islands): cable car, 15-island archipelago, diving.
  • North (pristine zone): solitary beaches, Phu Quoc National Park, pepper farms, traditional communities.

Climate: tropical. Dry season (November-April) is the good one; monsoon (May-October) much wetter with storms but cheaper and less crowded.

  • 🏝Area 567 km² (Vietnam's largest island)
  • 🌡Climate Tropical, 25-32 ºC
  • 🗓Best time November-April
  • 💰5* resort €100-300/night

The beaches: which to pick

North to south:

  • Bai Dai / Long Beach (northwest): 15 km of sand, lightly developed, for calm. JW Marriott resort in south Bai Dai — spectacular Bill Bensley architecture.
  • Cua Can Beach (north): square beach with river outlet, family-friendly.
  • Long Beach / Bai Truong (west central): the main tourist beach, 20 km, mid-range resorts. Great for sunset.
  • Sao Beach (southeast): the most photogenic, pure white sand, turquoise water. Semi-developed, beach shacks.
  • Khem Beach (south): sheltered, boutique JW Marriott Emerald Bay. Exclusive.

The over-sea cable car (Hon Thom)

Opened 2018. 7.9 km — the world’s longest over-sea cable car. Connects An Thoi with Hon Thom (southern island). Views of islets, transparent water, 15-min crossing. Includes access to Sun World Hon Thom — water park + private beach. 650,000 VND entry. Controversial (destroyed landscape, changed the island) but spectacular as experience.

Pepper farms and salt

Phu Quoc produces the best pepper in Southeast Asia (large grade, intense grain) and natural salt ponds for fish curing. Countryside tours (4-6 h) visit pepper farms, salt pans, nuoc mam factory (fermented fish sauce that gives character to the rest of Vietnamese cooking). 300-500,000 VND.

Phu Quoc fish sauce has had protected designation of origin since 2012 — the most prized version in Vietnam.

Phu Quoc in 2026 isn't the hidden island of 2010. It's a resort destination with 40+ 5-star hotels and over 5 million annual visitors. For authentic Vietnamese island feel, go to **Con Dao** or **Ly Son**. For comfortable beach + good price + access, Phu Quoc is the right answer.

Diving and snorkelling

An Thoi archipelago (south, 15 islands): southern Vietnam’s best snorkel + dive sites. Visibility 15-25 m, recovering coral, moderate fauna.

Recommended operators:

  • Rainbow Divers: international, safe, €80-150 per day.
  • Coco Dive: local, cheaper, €50-100.

Snorkel day tour (4 islands): 500-800,000 VND.

Dinh Cau Night Market

Central night market in Duong Dong. Fresh fish (lobsters, snappers, seasonal seafood) grilled in front of you. Variable price: from 300,000 VND per person with beer and seafood plate. Authentic, but haggle with restraint.

Where to sleep

Luxury:

  • JW Marriott Emerald Bay: the icon (€150-400).
  • Regent Phu Quoc: modern 5* (€180-350).

Mid:

  • Sunset Beach Resort: Long Beach front, €80-130.
  • Chez Carole Resort: eco-lodge north, €70-120.

Budget:

  • Mushrooms Hostel: backpacker, €15-25.

4-day route

  • Day 1: arrive + afternoon Long Beach.
  • Day 2: An Thoi tour + cable car + Sun World (or quiet beach day if theme parks aren’t your thing).
  • Day 3: pepper farms + northern island + Starfish Beach. Long Beach sunset.
  • Day 4: morning Sao Beach + night market + departure.

How to get there

  • Direct flight from Saigon: 1 h 10, 800-1,500,000 VND. The option.
  • Flight from Hanoi: 2 h 15, 1.5-3 million VND.
  • International flight: Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo connect directly.
  • Ferry: from Rach Gia or Ha Tien (5 h). Cheap but slow.
Traveller's tip: Phu Quoc makes sense as a **Vietnam trip closer**: after the intense cultural cycle (Hanoi → centre → Saigon), 3-4 nights in Phu Quoc as beach finale. If your priority is pristine beach + fisherman authenticity, **Con Dao** (deep south, 1 h flight from Saigon) is better — less developed, more expensive but authentic.
